Although an older man was briefly detained at the scene, authorities later clarified he was not the suspect, who remains unidentified and at large.

Kirk’s death was confirmed by former President Donald Trump, who paid tribute on Truth Social, calling him “great, and even Legendary” and urging prayers for his family.

Political figures across the spectrum expressed shock and grief. Vice President J.D. Vance, Utah Governor Spencer Cox, and California Governor Gavin Newsom were among those condemning the violence and offering condolences.

The FBI and ATF have joined local law enforcement in investigating the attack. Utah Valley University closed its campus, canceled classes, and evacuated students as authorities continued their search for the perpetrator.

Kirk, age 31, rose to prominence by mobilizing conservative youth through Turning Point USA and his daily podcast. He is survived by his wife, Erika, and their two children.
