Driver dies after bus carrying Italian basketball fans pelted with stones and bricks

A bus carrying supporters of Pistoia Basket 2000 was attacked with stones and bricks after an away Serie A2 match in Rieti on Sunday night, and one of the men on board — a 65-year-old assistant driver or co-driver died after being struck by a projectile that smashed through the windscreen. Emergency crews attempted resuscitation but he did not survive.

Police say the attack took place on the Rieti–Terni highway shortly after the official police escort left the convoy. The bus was carrying several dozen supporters returning from the match; reports put the number of fans on board at around 40–50. Several people reportedly hurled bricks, stones and other heavy objects at the vehicle.

Authorities have detained suspects as the investigation continues. Local reports say a number of Rieti ultras have been questioned and some arrests have been made in connection with the assault. Prosecutors and Carabinieri are examining video and witness accounts to identify those responsible.

Political and sporting leaders condemned the violence. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called the episode “unacceptable and insane,” while Italy’s sports minister described it as a “shocking assault” and stressed that such behaviour is incompatible with sport. Both Pistoia and Rieti clubs issued statements expressing shock and offering condolences to the victim’s family.

Italian police said inquiries were at an early stage and urged restraint while the probe continues. Prosecutors are treating the case as an act of serious public violence, and investigators will seek to establish how the group assembled and why the attack occurred so soon after the match. Further legal measures are expected as suspects are identified and charges are considered.
