Dozens injured after magnitude 7.5 quake strikes northern Japan

A powerful earthquake measuring 7.5 on the Richter scale struck off the northeastern coast of Japan late on Monday night, causing injuries and prompting widespread evacuations. The epicentre was located approximately 80 kilometres off the coast of Aomori Prefecture at a depth of around 50–54 kilometres, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. Authorities reported at least 30 people injured, most of them suffering from injuries caused by falling objects during the intense shaking.

The quake triggered a tsunami warning for several coastal prefectures, including Aomori, Iwate, and Hokkaido. Initial estimates predicted waves up to three metres, but observed tsunami waves were significantly smaller, reaching up to 70 centimetres in some ports. The warnings were lifted early on Tuesday after the waves subsided. Tens of thousands of residents were temporarily evacuated, and emergency shelters were opened to accommodate those in need.

Infrastructure across the affected region was disrupted, with power outages reported in multiple towns and high-speed and local train services, including the Shinkansen, halted while inspections were conducted. Emergency response teams were deployed to assess damage, restore utilities, and assist affected communities. The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a “megaquake advisory,” warning residents to remain alert for aftershocks, including the possibility of a larger magnitude-8 quake.

Eyewitnesses described harrowing scenes of buildings swaying, ceilings collapsing, glass shattering, and residents rushing outdoors in panic amid freezing winter conditions. In some towns, hotel guests were injured by falling ceilings, and roads cracked under the force of the tremor. Despite the chaos, early reports indicate that damage to homes and infrastructure was mostly light to moderate, although emergency teams continue to survey remote coastal areas and regions near nuclear facilities. No critical issues have been reported at these sites.

Authorities continue to urge residents to remain vigilant, secure furniture, and maintain evacuation plans in case of further aftershocks, which are expected in the coming days. Power and train services are gradually being restored, and local officials are focused on ensuring the safety and well-being of affected communities.
