Two women killed at Kentucky church as gunman opens fire after shooting officer.

Two individuals were fatally shot at a Kentucky church following a car chase that began with a shooter shooting and injuring a police officer, according to officials. The perpetrator shot a state trooper during a traffic stop before carjacking a vehicle and going to Richmond Road Baptist Church in Lexington, where he opened fire on parishioners before being shot dead by law officials. Two ladies, aged 72 and 32, were killed in Sunday’s incident at the church, while two male parishioners were injured, according to authorities. Investigators believe the suspect had a relationship to certain people at the church. Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear stated on X that “violence like this has no place in our commonwealth or country”

The original incident took place on Sunday at 11:36 a.m. local time (15:36 GMT) near the Blue Grass Airport, a regional airport in Fayette County. A state trooper stopped the suspect’s automobile on Terminal Drive after receiving a registration plate reader alert, Lexington Police Chief Lawrence Weathers said at a news conference. He said the incident had nothing to do with the airport. The suspect shot the trooper, causing non-life-threatening injuries, according to Chief Weathers. The gunman then carried out a car-jacking, during which the vehicle’s passenger was not wounded, before heading towards the church approximately 16 miles (25km) away, with law authorities in pursuit. “The suspect fired his weapon at individuals on church property,” Chief Weathers stated.

Preliminary information suggests that the suspect may have known the people at the church. “Four persons, two males and two ladies, were shot on church premises. The county coroner’s office identified the two ladies as Beverly Gum, 72, and Christina Combs, 32. They were pronounced dead on the scene. The two male victims were taken to a local hospital, with one suffering critical injuries and the other in stable condition. “The suspect was shot by responding law enforcement and was pronounced deceased at the scene,” said Chief Weathers, adding that the gunman’s identity will be revealed once next-of-kin were notified.

According to the county coroner, the church was small, with the majority of attendance being relatives or close friends. “It’s a very tight-knit group of people,” he told me. The Kentucky State Police and the Public Integrity Unit were investigating the event.
