PETE KEATING AND THE RENSLOW TRESTLE – LOUDER

Louder” is a song by Pete Keating and The Renslow Trestle in which the pair draw upon the storytelling customs of Americana to deal with a topic that has become more pertinent as time goes on—namely, how to keep a sense of strength when the world begins to throw up greater obstacles. The single released on July 3rd shows a resolute attitude, presenting perseverance as something that needs to be put into action. By focusing on ordinary struggles, Keating’s songwriting gives the song a relatable character without turning its main idea into a cliché.

There is a clear intention to achieve immediacy. When at London Bridge Studios in Seattle, Keating recorded his acoustic guitar and lead vocals at the same time during the first session, thus keeping the natural connection between the way he played and the way he phrased the song. Eric Lilavois was in charge of production and engineering, and The Renslow Trestle added to the arrangement by including piano, upright bass, drums, electric guitar and backing vocals. The group produces a rich and full backdrop to Keating’s songwriting without in any way hiding the simple character of the piece.

The inspiration for the song is especially impressive. After meeting an older guitarist who was living with Multiple Sclerosis, Keating met a man who had refused to accept the idea that he would never be able to play again. By staying determined and making adjustments, the musician got back to playing his instrument and this left a strong impression on Keating which led directly to the writing of the song just two days later. It is this link which gives “Louder” a human element, turning the concept of overcoming adversity into something concrete and personal.

The impression that remains with the listener is that the song does not see difficulty as an excuse to remain unchanged. “Louder” promotes a more active attitude: face the weight, make adjustments when needed, and keep going with a clear purpose. Because of its roots-based nature the recording has a timeless feel to it, and the message is one that can be directly applied to anyone going through a difficult period. Keating and his band take a moment of personal inspiration and turn it into a song concerning persistence, courage, and the decision to move forward.
