Brown University Shooting Suspect Found Dead, Authorities Confirm

Authorities say the man suspected of carrying out a deadly shooting at Brown University has been found dead, bringing an end to an intense, multi-state manhunt that unsettled campus communities across New England. Police confirmed that the suspect was discovered inside a storage facility in New Hampshire, where investigators believe he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The investigation began after a shooting at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, where a gunman opened fire inside an academic building, killing two people and injuring several others. The attack prompted a large police response and led university officials to suspend activities and increase security as students and staff were urged to shelter in place. Law enforcement agencies at the local, state and federal levels launched a coordinated search for the suspect, releasing images and vehicle information to the public.

As the investigation progressed, police said evidence emerged linking the same suspect to the killing of an MIT professor at a home in Massachusetts days after the Brown University shooting. Authorities believe the two incidents were connected, though they have not publicly detailed a clear motive. Surveillance footage, license-plate data and tips from the public ultimately helped investigators trace the suspect’s movements across state lines.

Police said the suspect was located after officers followed leads to a storage facility, where they discovered his body along with a firearm. Officials said there was no ongoing threat to the public and emphasized that the discovery brought a measure of closure after days of fear and uncertainty. An autopsy has been scheduled as part of the ongoing investigation.

Brown University and MIT officials expressed sorrow for the victims and their families, offering counseling and support services to students, faculty and staff affected by the violence. Law enforcement officials said the investigation remains active as they work to fully understand the suspect’s actions and any factors that may have led to the shootings.
