Colombia launches search after plane goes missing with 15 aboard

Colombian authorities have launched an intensive search operation after a small aircraft carrying 15 people went missing shortly after take-off in the northeast of the country. The plane, which was on a domestic flight from the city of Cúcuta to Ocaña in the Norte de Santander region near the Venezuelan border, lost contact with air traffic control minutes into the journey, according to officials from Colombia’s civil aviation authority.

The aircraft, operated by a local airline, was carrying 13 passengers and two crew members when it disappeared from radar. Emergency protocols were immediately activated, prompting the deployment of military aircraft, helicopters, and ground rescue teams to search the mountainous and heavily forested area where the plane was last detected. Authorities said poor weather conditions and difficult terrain have complicated search efforts.

Government officials confirmed that among those on board were civilians and individuals traveling for official and personal reasons, though full passenger details were still being verified. Families of the passengers gathered at the departure airport as they awaited information, while officials urged the public to avoid speculation as the search continued.

Colombia’s defence and transport ministries said all available resources were being used to locate the missing aircraft and determine what caused the loss of contact. An investigation has been opened, and aviation experts are expected to examine factors such as weather, terrain, and possible technical issues once the plane is found. Authorities said they would continue to provide updates as new information becomes available.
