Donald Trump welcomed to Windsor Castle by King Charles and senior royals

U.S. President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were ceremonially welcomed at Windsor Castle today by King Charles III, Queen Camilla, and senior members of the British royal family, marking the start of his unprecedented second state visit to the United Kingdom.

The royal reception was replete with pomp: a full guard of honour, a military band, and an official carriage procession across the Windsor estate. The President and First Lady touched down via Marine One at Victoria House on the royal grounds and were greeted by Prince William and Princess Catherine, before proceeding to meet with the King and Queen.

Horses, uniforms, national anthems, artillery salutes — all elements were in place to underscore the diplomatic significance of the visit. The scale of the welcome has been described by observers as among the most elaborate ever extended for visiting leaders.

What Makes This Visit Historic

This visit, from September 17 to 19, 2025, is the second state visit by Trump to the UK, a rarity for an American president. The last such visit was in 2019, when he was welcomed by the late Queen Elizabeth II. Now, King Charles III extends the invitation amid hopes of reinforcing the “special relationship” between the two nations.

Security has been tight. Given high public interest and potential for protest, authorities have mobilised substantial resources. Some demonstrations are already underway, and security measures are visible around the Windsor estate.

Aside from the ceremonial welcome, the visit is expected to include a state banquet, private meetings, and efforts to deepen UK-U.S. cooperation, particularly in tech and trade. Prime Minister Keir Starmer is also scheduled to meet with President Trump during the visit.

Some political controversy surrounds the timing — Parliament is in recess, meaning Trump will not address MPs  and there has been opposition from public groups critical of his policy positions. Nevertheless, the British government has emphasised the diplomatic and symbolic importance of the visit.

What to Watch

  • Speeches by King Charles III and President Trump at the state banquet
  • Any formal statements or agreements, particularly around technology, trade or defense
  • Public reaction and protests in London later during the visit

This event underlines the enduring ceremonial and diplomatic role of the British monarchy, while offering Trump an opportunity to shore up ties with a key U.S. ally during a time of global political realignments.
