Flames Near Madrid as Wildfires Burn Across Spain and Portugal

Europe is currently engulfed in one of its most destructive wildfire seasons in years, with Spain and Portugal bearing the brunt amid an intense and lingering heatwave.

Spain: Near Madrid, Tragedy and Massive Evacuations

A wildfire that broke out in the Tres Cantos region, just north of Madrid, rapidly spread across over 1,000 hectares. In just 40 minutes, it devastated homes in Soto de Viñuelas and surrounding suburbs, claiming at least one life, a man who sustained burns over 98% of his body while trying to rescue horses from a stable. Residents rushed back to find charred wrecks of homes and stables, with heart-wrenching scenes of destruction including the death of 26 horses. Authorities evacuated approximately 180 people from affected areas and deployed national resources to contain the fire.

Simultaneously, northern Spain especially near the Las Médulas national park—experienced “fire whirls,” tornado-like fire spirals driven by extreme heat and strong winds. These phenomena prompted the evacuation of about 800 people, destroyed homes, and underscored the ferocity of the blazes .Across regions like Castile and León, Castile-La Mancha, Andalusia, and Galicia, thousands of people were evacuated, while firefighters battled tens of wildfires—some requiring the intervention of the military  .

Portugal: Trancoso and Beyond—A Struggle Against the Flames

In Portugal, the fire near Trancoso northeast of Lisbon, has become one of the country’s most challenging to date. For over ten days, nearly 700 firefighters have been battling the blaze, which has already consumed thousands of hectares and exceeded the region’s typical fire footprint.

Other parts of northern Portugal are also under siege: Major fires in regions like Vila Real are still active, stretching firefighting capacities with aerial units and ground crews working tirelessly.

Wider Europe: Heatwave Fuels a Continental Blaze

This wildfire outbreak is part of a broader European crisis, with Greece, Turkey, France, the Balkans, and others also battling flames. In Greece, at least seven major fires are active, prompting evacuation in the west and on tourist islands. In Turkey, a devastating fire in Canakkale forced thousands to flee and disrupted air and maritime routes. France is under red alert for heat, with high fire risks across the south and record temperatures in areas like Bordeaux. Across the Balkans, wildfires in Albania, Montenegro, and Croatia have burned tens of thousands of hectares, with international relief

Experts emphasize the link between soaring wildfire frequency and climate change. Europe, especially the Mediterranean, is warming at twice the global average, creating dry, scorching summers that turn small blazes into catastrophic infernos. Authorities have responded with military support, emergency services, and national coordination. Spain has entered a “pre-emergency phase,” deploying nearly 1,000 armed forces to assist firefighting efforts  . Portugal is equally fortified with large-scale firefighting deployment.
