Ghana Temporarily Suspends Citizenship Applications for People of African Descent

The Government of Ghana has temporarily suspended the processing of citizenship applications for people of African descent living abroad, a move officials say is aimed at reviewing and improving the system rather than ending the policy altogether. The suspension affects individuals commonly referred to as historical diasporans, including descendants of Africans dispersed through the transatlantic slave trade.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of the Interior in collaboration with the Diaspora Affairs Office of the President, authorities explained that the pause will allow for administrative reforms to streamline procedures, enhance transparency and ensure the integrity of the citizenship process. Officials stressed that the decision does not signal a shift away from Ghana’s long-standing Pan-African commitment but is instead a temporary measure to strengthen the programme.

The citizenship pathway for people of African descent has been a key part of Ghana’s efforts to reconnect with the global African diaspora, particularly following initiatives such as the “Year of Return” and the ongoing “Beyond the Return” programme. These initiatives have attracted thousands of visitors and long-term settlers from the United States, the Caribbean, Europe and other regions, many of whom have sought legal residency or citizenship in Ghana.

Government sources indicated that the growing number of applications in recent years placed pressure on existing systems, making a review necessary. While no specific date has been announced for the resumption of applications, officials said revised guidelines and procedures will be communicated once the review is completed.

The announcement has generated mixed reactions among diaspora communities. Some prospective applicants expressed disappointment over the delay, while others welcomed the review, saying a clearer and more efficient process would ultimately benefit applicants. Ghanaian authorities have reiterated that the country remains open and committed to strengthening ties with people of African descent worldwide and that the suspension is intended to ensure the citizenship programme operates effectively when it resumes.
