Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has carried out a sweeping reshuffle of his top team following the sudden resignation of deputy leader Angela Rayner earlier today.
Rayner stepped down from her government roles and party position amid mounting scrutiny over unpaid tax linked to her £800,000 flat in Hove, East Sussex. Her departure prompted swift action from Starmer, who announced changes to the frontbench aimed at shoring up stability and keeping Labour’s focus on the upcoming general election.
The reshuffle includes the promotion of several rising figures within the party, as well as adjustments to key portfolios. Starmer said the new line-up reflects his commitment to “integrity, accountability, and readiness for government.”
“Today is about ensuring Labour has the strongest possible team in place to deliver for the British people. We respect Angela’s decision, and I thank her for her enormous contribution. Now, our focus must remain firmly on winning the next election and rebuilding Britain,” Starmer said in a statement.
Senior Labour sources described the changes as “the most significant shake-up since Starmer took the leadership,” with emphasis placed on uniting the party after a turbulent day.
Analysts suggest the reshuffle could mark a turning point in Labour’s leadership dynamic, as the party seeks to steady itself while maintaining momentum against the Conservatives. The new appointments are expected to be formally announced to Parliament tomorrow.
