Several people were shot Sunday morning at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc, about 50–60 miles north of Detroit, and the church was later set on fire, officials said. Law enforcement said the shooter has been “down” and there is no ongoing threat to the public as investigators work at the scene.
Authorities from the Grand Blanc Township Police Department, assisted by the FBI and the ATF, responded to reports of an active shooter at the church on McCandlish Road. Emergency crews fought an intense blaze that severely damaged the building and at one point caused a partial structural collapse, police said. Investigators described the scene as “dynamic” while they collected evidence and canvassed the area.

Initial official counts and media reports indicate multiple victims: several people were wounded and at least one person was confirmed dead. Some local outlets reported that as many as nine people were injured, though authorities cautioned that casualty figures were still being confirmed as the investigation continued. Children were reported among the injured in some accounts.
State and local officials expressed shock and sorrow. Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer said her “heart is breaking” for the Grand Blanc community and condemned violence in places of worship, while law enforcement emphasized the priority of family reunification and support for survivors. Federal personnel with the FBI and ATF joined the probe to determine the motive and reconstruct the sequence of events.
The attack came amid a tense and rapidly developing situation; news organizations noted the incident occurred a day after the reported death of Russell M. Nelson, longtime president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, though officials have not linked that event to the shooting. Authorities urged the public to avoid the area while emergency and investigative operations continue. More details, including the shooter’s identity and motive, have not yet been released pending confirmation by investigators.
