British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has dismissed Peter Mandelson from his role as the United Kingdom’s Ambassador to the United States following the emergence of new revelations about Mandelson’s relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
The decision comes after the publication of previously undisclosed emails and letters, including a 2003 birthday message in which Mandelson referred to Epstein as his “best pal.” These communications, which also included advice to Epstein on legal matters related to his 2008 conviction, were not known at the time of Mandelson’s appointment as ambassador in February 2025.
In a statement, the UK Foreign Office acknowledged that the depth of Mandelson’s relationship with Epstein was “materially different” from what had been understood during the vetting process. The Foreign Secretary was instructed to withdraw Mandelson from his diplomatic post.
Mandelson, a prominent figure in the Labour Party and former Cabinet minister, expressed regret over his association with Epstein, stating that he had been misled by Epstein’s legal team and now recognizes Epstein as a criminal liar. He acknowledged that the newly revealed communications were “disturbing and sickening” and emphasized that he had never witnessed any illicit activity.
The dismissal has prompted political fallout, with opposition parties and some members of the Labour Party calling for further investigation into Mandelson’s actions. The timing of the revelations is particularly sensitive as preparations are underway for a state visit from U.S. President Donald Trump, who has also faced scrutiny over his past associations with Epstein.
