When Midnight begins, there’s an immediate sense of stillness, as if the world has paused between one breath and the next. Written and composed by Richard Green, the single feels deeply personal, less concerned with grandeur and more focused on atmosphere. Green, an Italian musician who refined his craft after moving to London in 2012, has always explored contrasts in his work. With Midnight, he leans into restraint, allowing emotion to surface naturally rather than forcing it forward.
The track appears on his first EP, A Journey, the opening chapter of a three-part musical trilogy. Conceptually, Midnight represents the exact moment a day ends and another begins. You can hear that transition in the composition itself: the piano introduces a reflective mood, almost fragile, before the strings gradually widen the emotional landscape. There’s sadness here, but it’s thoughtful rather than heavy, more contemplation than despair. The piece unfolds patiently, rewarding careful listening.
Much of the song’s depth comes from its collaborators. Pianist Irene Veneziano brings clarity and nuance to every phrase, while the Archimia Strings Quartet add warmth and cinematic texture. Recorded at Studio Elfo near Piacenza, the performance feels organic and sincere. There’s no sense of overproduction, just skilled musicians interpreting a carefully shaped composition.

Although originally released in 2022, Midnight is gaining renewed attention as Green promotes the now-complete trilogy, later continued with The Circle Closes and First Light. What stands out most is his willingness to blend classical foundations with modern sensibilities without losing authenticity. Midnight doesn’t demand attention loudly; instead, it earns it quietly, lingering long after the final note fades.
