Authorities in Utah say the suspect accused of fatally shooting conservative commentator Charlie Kirk is in custody after being turned in by members of his family.
The suspect has been identified as Tyler James Robinson, 22, of Utah, who was arrested Thursday night in Washington County and booked into Utah County Jail without bail. Officials confirmed that Robinson faces charges of aggravated murder, firearm discharge causing serious injury, and obstruction of justice.
Kirk, founder of the conservative youth organization Turning Point USA, was shot and killed earlier this week at Utah Valley University, prompting a nationwide manhunt and widespread reaction across the political spectrum.
According to Utah Governor Spencer Cox, Robinson allegedly confessed or implied involvement in the shooting to a family member. That relative then told a family friend, who alerted law enforcement. In addition, Robinson’s father reportedly recognized his son from surveillance images released by the FBI and encouraged him to come forward.
“Thanks to the cooperation of those close to the suspect, authorities were able to take him into custody without incident,” Cox said Friday.
Investigators say they have recovered a bolt-action rifle believed to be the weapon used in the attack. Bullet casings found at the scene were engraved with messages, and surveillance footage reportedly captured Robinson fleeing after the shooting. Prosecutors also allege Robinson used Discord to communicate about retrieving the rifle from a prearranged drop point.
The arrest quickly drew attention from political leaders. President Donald Trump said Friday that “with a high degree of certainty we have him in custody,” noting that the suspect was turned in by someone close to him.
Supporters and critics alike have continued to react to Kirk’s death, which has sparked intense debate online and renewed concerns about politically motivated violence.
Robinson is expected to appear in court for an initial hearing in the coming days. Officials said the investigation remains ongoing as detectives continue to examine evidence and determine a possible motive.
“This is a major step forward, but our work is not finished,” Utah County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson told reporters.
Kirk, 31, was a prominent figure in conservative politics, known for his outspoken advocacy and campus organizing efforts. His killing has left a significant void in right-wing political circles, where he was regarded as one of the most influential voices of his generation.
