EXZENYA – Forgiven For The Last Time

To admit that you’ve made a mistake is one thing; to forgive yourself for having done so is quite something else. In “Forgiven for the Last Time”, Exzenya looks at that difficult distinction, it being a pop/soul ballad which investigates the emotional effects of remaining in a relationship after it should have been the case that one had left. The song starts off with the tension of a conversation which neither person can evade, setting a tone of vulnerability before making clear its more profound intention. Although at first it seems to be a confrontation it turns out to be a process of coming to terms with one’s own decisions, thereby changing the emotional emphasis from betrayal to self-acceptance.

Regret is a central feature of the narrative, especially in the case when the narrator admits that she had reasons to leave long before but chose to stay. The fact that she has been willing to believe her partner also causes her pain, particularly when she reflects on the way her family too came to trust him. This point means that the story goes beyond simple romantic disappointment and shows how deception can have an impact on a whole circle of people. Instead of focusing entirely on the individual to blame, the song looks at the hard consequences of misplaced faith and the weight of having to acknowledge one’s own choices.

The piano and the lead vocal are the main elements of the arrangement, and the restrained production provides a lot of room for the emotional narrative. Because it is at 86 BPM the song prefers a steady progression to one that is based on a groove. As the piece develops it reflects the change in the narrator’s point of view, progressing from a first fragile state to a more settled acceptance of responsibility and the need for healing. This slow transition is appropriate for the subject matter, since it enables the emotional intensity to come through in the performance and the storytelling rather than relying on an overblown climax.

One of the most telling features of the song “Forgiven for the Last Time” is the way it views forgiveness as an internal choice rather than something that someone else has to earn. The narrator doesn’t have to alter the past or refute the deception in order to move on; instead, she simply has to stop letting those experiences determine her relationship with herself. Since it ends with the possibility of healing and the idea of leaving the pain behind, the song has a feeling of closure without implying that recovery occurs immediately. The message is quietly powerful in that acceptance of what took place can start with letting go of the self-blame.
