GIANFRANCO MALORGIO – GREASEBALL

“Greaseball” treats the topic of human migration through a structure influenced by historical prejudice, displacement and the difficult situations which cause people to leave their home countries. It forms the last chapter of a trilogy concerned with migration and, like “WOP” and “An Immigrant’s Story”, looks at the experiences common to communities across various generations. The title has important historical implications since it refers to an ethnic insult aimed at Italian immigrants and their descendants, thus giving the work a focus on the realities of exclusion and belonging.

Instead of viewing migration as a separate historical event, “Greaseball” is part of a more general reflection on the hardships which have caused people to cross borders. War, economic problems and other crises still form the core of the situation described in the concept of the piece. Because it goes beyond Italian emigration to include migrants from all over the world, the work links a particular cultural history with a much wider human experience. This way of framing provides the song with a significant basis without isolating its subject from the lives and identities of those affected by displacement.

The piece was composed by Malorgio, with synthesizer input provided by the composer and the guitar played by Moreno Viglione, thus combining two distinctly identifiable creative components. Viglione is also in charge of production, mixing and mastering, and so ensures the final appearance of the recording. Since these contributions are part of Malorgio’s work on music that could be synchronized with films, soundtracks and documentaries, the composition can be seen as belonging to that body of work; its original conception with a film adaptation in view also reinforces the link between the piece and visual storytelling.

‘Greaseball’ forms the conclusion of a trilogy which looks at the theme of migration in various compositional works, since its name deals with a difficult aspect of Italian immigrant history. The general subject matter gives the work a significance that extends beyond one particular community by highlighting the prejudice and difficulties linked with leaving one’s home. As the last part of this three-piece project, its examination of migration comes to an end while still maintaining a firm focus on the experiences of displaced people.
