Kasper Hjulmand Confirmed as New Bayer Leverkusen Manager

Bayer 04 Leverkusen have announced the appointment of Kasper Hjulmand as their new head coach, moving quickly to steady the ship after Erik ten Hag’s dismissal just three games into the new Bundesliga season.

The Danish coach, 53, arrives with both international and Bundesliga experience, having guided Denmark to the semi-finals of Euro 2020 and later leading them at the 2022 World Cup and Euro 2024. He stepped down from his national team role last year, but his stock remained high thanks to his ability to blend tactical flexibility with a calm leadership style. In Germany, fans will remember his brief spell at Mainz 05 during the 2014–15 campaign, while in Denmark he made his name with FC Nordsjælland, where he won the Superliga title in 2012 and the Danish Cup a year earlier.

Hjulmand’s arrival in Leverkusen comes after a discreet meeting with sporting director Simon Rolfes at a Düsseldorf hotel over the weekend, which local media say was decisive in sealing the deal. His reputation for resilience was forged not only on the pitch but also off it; he was widely praised for the way he guided Denmark through the traumatic collapse of Christian Eriksen at Euro 2020, earning recognition at home as “Leader of the Year.”

For Leverkusen, the choice signals a move toward stability and long-term vision. Hjulmand is fluent in German and admired for his adaptable, modern approach to the game, qualities the club believes will help him integrate quickly and build on the strong foundations already in place.

The final details of his contract are still being finalized, but Leverkusen have made it clear that Hjulmand is their man to guide the team forward. His task will be immediate: to restore confidence, keep pace with Bundesliga rivals, and maintain the club’s growing presence in European football.
