Authorities in Shreveport are investigating a mass shooting that left eight children dead, including seven from the same family, in what officials say is the deadliest such incident in the United States since 2024.
Police say the gunman, identified by multiple reports as 31-year-old Shamar Elkins, carried out the attack early Sunday in what investigators believe began as a domestic dispute. According to law enforcement, the violence unfolded across several locations, starting with the shooting of an adult woman before the suspect moved to a nearby home where most of the children were killed. The victims were all minors, with ages reported to range from infancy to early teens.
Officials said seven of the children were found inside a residence, while another child was killed outside, reportedly while attempting to escape. Two women were also injured and remain hospitalized with serious wounds. Authorities have described the case as an extreme instance of domestic violence, sometimes referred to as a “family annihilation,” in which a perpetrator targets close relatives.
Following the shootings, the suspect fled the area, allegedly carjacked a vehicle, and led police on a pursuit into a neighboring parish. The chase ended when law enforcement officers confronted and fatally shot him. Police confirmed that no other suspects are believed to be involved. Investigators are still working to determine a clear motive, but early indications point to personal and family-related tensions, including reports of a relationship breakdown. Officials have not released full details, and the investigation remains ongoing.

The scale of the tragedy has drawn national attention, with comparisons being made to the Joliet shootings, which also left eight people dead and had previously been among the deadliest recent incidents of its kind. Experts note that a significant proportion of mass killings in the United States occur within domestic settings, often involving individuals known to the perpetrator.
Local and state leaders have expressed shock and grief, calling the incident one of the most devastating in the region’s history. Community organizations have begun offering counseling and support services to affected families and residents, as the city grapples with the aftermath of the violence.
