LYNDO JACO – 3

Curiosity is a key feature of LYNDO JACO’s “3”. Rather than following a single clear narrative or emotional tone, the EP shifts from one idea to another and from one point of view to another. Although it has a rock base, which provides a familiar foundation, JACO’s songwriting takes the work in a more unexpected direction. The songs focus on people facing situations that are not especially glamorous—such as supporting a team that is struggling, needing money and making dubious efforts to improve their situation.

This gives the EP a somewhat rough, human touch. The clumsy thief in particular contributes a sense of flawed ambition to the work. Instead of being portrayed as a criminal of great stature, the description suggests someone who is merely trying to get out of a tough spot and who ends up making a mess of things in the process. A character like that suits well alongside the sporting narrative, where persistence is maintained even if things aren’t going well.

JACO has also established a more definite form in his songwriting in this instance. “3” is noted to be more structured than in his earlier work, and this is significant since it enables the ideas to be expressed without them becoming confused. The warmer tone also contributes to the songs having a distinct character, but it is the writing itself that is the primary reason for taking the time to listen to the EP. The influences from the South and hard rock are obvious reference points, even though they do not entirely determine the direction of the project.

One of the most attractive aspects of ‘3’ is the fact that it comes across as a personal initiative rather than one based on a formula. JACO is at ease in discovering stories in unconventional situations and in viewing well-known experiences from a strange point of view. The end product is an EP with its own peculiarities and flaws, yet it also has a more definite direction. ‘3’ illustrates an artist improving his songwriting without eliminating the odd characteristics that give his point of view its interest.
