In a dramatic escalation of the war, Russia launched its largest-ever aerial attack on Ukraine overnight, deploying over 800 drones and a dozen missiles in a sweeping assault across multiple cities. Among the most alarming outcomes was the first-ever direct strike on Kyiv’s main government building, igniting fires and severely damaging its roof and upper floors.
Ukraine’s Prime Minister, Yulia Svyrydenko, confirmed the unprecedented damage on Telegram: “For the first time, the Government building was damaged by an enemy strike—its roof and upper floors.” Rescue teams remain engaged in firefighting operations.
The humanitarian toll has been severe. Authorities report at least three civilians were killed, including an infant, and 18 others injured. Many of these casualties occurred when drones struck residential areas such as the Darnytskyi and Sviatoshynskyi districts. One child’s body was recovered from the rubble, while a young woman also lost her life. Fires broke out in multiple buildings after impact.
Ukraine’s Air Force described the scale of the attack as historically unprecedented. Of approximately 810 drones and missiles launched by Russian forces, Ukrainian defenses intercepted the majority 751 drones and several missiles. Nonetheless, dozens still found their targets across 33 locations, including in Zaporizhzhia, Dnipro, Kremenchuk, Kryvyi Rih, and Odesa.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and other Ukrainian leaders immediately condemned the attack. Zelenskyy called it a “vile” act and insisted that only the international community’s political will can force the Kremlin to halt its campaign. Ukraine’s Foreign Minister described the strike as a dangerous escalation, all while the nation grapples with the irreplaceable loss of civilian life.
Internationally, the attack triggered defensive responses. NATO and Polish air forces elevated their readiness to protect nearby airspace. In Kyiv, residents were urgently pulled into bomb shelters amid the ongoing drone and missile alerts.
This strike represents more than infrastructure damage it is a symbolic blow. Striking the clutch of Ukraine’s political administration sends a chilling message of intent and escalation. As Kyiv and its allies regroup, the world watches, reminded yet again of the fragility of peace and the enduring human cost of war.
