A 36-year-old British man tragically lost his life off the coast of Melbourne on Wednesday afternoon after his surfboard snapped in treacherous conditions. His 43-year-old friend, a local resident, attempted to rescue him but also perished in the rough seas.
The incident occurred around 5:00 PM near Frankston Pier as the region was experiencing severe weather, including wind gusts up to 130 km/h (81 mph). The British man, described as an “inexperienced” surfer, was reportedly learning to surf when his board broke, leaving him struggling in the turbulent waters. His friend, witnessing the distress, jumped in to assist but both were overwhelmed by the conditions.
Emergency services responded swiftly, with a police rescue helicopter retrieving both men from the water. Despite efforts to revive them, both were pronounced dead at the scene. One emergency responder was briefly hospitalized after ingesting a large amount of water during the operation but has since been released.
Authorities have yet to formally identify the victims as next-of-kin are still being notified. Victoria Police and local officials have emphasized the dangers of entering the water in severe weather, urging the public to avoid such risks to themselves and rescuers. Frankston Mayor Kris Bolam called the incident a tragic reminder of nature’s power, advising people to stay away from coastal areas during extreme weather. A report will be prepared for the coroner.
This incident highlights the importance of exercising caution and adhering to safety guidelines, especially during adverse weather conditions.
