Violence Erupts Across Mexico After Death of Drug Lord “El Mencho”

Violence has erupted across Mexico following reports that notorious drug lord Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, widely known as El Mencho, was killed during a federal military operation. El Mencho was the long-time leader of the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel, one of the country’s most dominant and violent criminal groups. According to multiple international media outlets including CBS News and AP News, Mexican forces located him in the state of Jalisco and carried out an operation that resulted in his death after an intense confrontation.

Shortly after news of his killing spread, coordinated retaliation began in several regions. Armed groups reportedly set vehicles ablaze, blocked highways, and clashed with security forces in major urban areas including Guadalajara and the coastal resort city of Puerto Vallarta. Smoke was seen rising from different parts of affected cities as authorities urged residents to remain indoors. Reports indicate that security personnel were among those killed in the wave of violence, while additional casualties are still being assessed.

The federal government has increased troop deployments and reinforced security checkpoints in an effort to restore order. President Claudia Sheinbaum described the operation as a significant step in the fight against organised crime but acknowledged that instability could follow as rival factions compete for control. Analysts interviewed by Al Jazeera warned that removing a cartel leader often creates a power vacuum that can intensify violence rather than immediately reduce it.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation as investigations remain ongoing, while citizens in several states face disruptions to transportation, schooling, and daily activities amid heightened security measures.
