DownTown Mystic is bringing back “Maybe Love’s A Crime” a single that upholds the lasting spirit of American rock and roll and at the same time takes a different course from the project’s recent Mystic Highway Road Trip EP. Standing in the tradition which places a strong emphasis on songwriting and musical character, the new release maintains the blend of the vintage and the modern that is characteristic of DownTown Mystic; the unexpected nature of this move offers a refreshing change of pace and shows that well-known influences can still allow for new creative ideas.
American rock and roll has for ever been able to draw on its capacity to evolve while at the same time retaining its basic roots. “Maybe Love’s A Crime” fits into this tradition by showing a respect for the sounds and styles which have helped to shape the genre. Instead of treating the new release as a simple extension of their earlier work, DownTown Mystic offers a different viewpoint which prompts listeners to consider the single in its own right.
The fact that the project has always been interested in vintage recording and traditional rock influences offers a useful background for understanding this release. Yet the single’s importance is due to the fact that it fits into a continuous creative process in which traditional musical values may exist alongside new ones. The choice to take a different approach after the earlier EP shows a readiness to go beyond usual expectations rather than just sticking to the existing formula.
‘Maybe Love’s A Crime’ gives yet another chance to realise the enduring significance of American rock and roll is notable, since its link with that tradition gives it a well-defined character and at the same time its deviation from the last record creates a sense of intrigue. For those who enjoy rock music that is rooted in its history yet willing to embrace creative experimentation, DownTown Mystic produces a song which shows that the established genre still has future possibilities.
